Marianne's Response
Janet-question
I cannot keep Sago Palms, planted in large pots, alive from summer to summer. What can I do to store and fertilize them during the winter so that they can be brought back out in the spring? I usually store them in the garage during winter.

Most palms are very sensitive to frosts and so should be brought indoors for the winter and grown as houseplants. Palms are often overwatered and over fertilized so put them in a clay pot for better drainage, use a cactus mix and use a slow release plant food like Osmocote rather than a liquid plant food. Water very little and do not add extra plant food until summer when the palms go back outside. The hardiest palms I know of are the Windmill palms and these grow more cold tolerant the longer they survive outdoors.
