I love giving seminars on attracting butterflies and humming birds and some of my designs have been used in magazines so I love this question! Start with a hardy shrub like the buddleah or butterfly bush and surround it with tubular blooms like those from Salvia \"Hot Lips\" that has the bright red accent colors on the flower petals. In full sun you can also plant sedum 'Autumn Joy', lavender and rudbeckias daisies. In a shaded area use fuchsias, coral bells and pulmonaria. Native plants are important as hummingbirds and butterflies are first attracted to the native trees and shrubs that grow wild along the roadsides and wooded area. To really pamper the butterflies set out some overly ripe fruit such as grape halves on a shallow plate and keep a damp sponge in a saucer of water for butterfly drinks. Hummingbirds will be attracted to the sound of water so a table or wall fountain will encourage them to visit often and maybe even start a family in your garden. Enjoy the adventure, Marianne Binetti
