Marianne's Response

Love Lies Bleeding

I am looking for an old fashioned plant that my grandmother used to grow. She called it “Love Lies Bleeding,” and it had long red flowers. Do you know it?

Yes, this annual plant is also called the Chenille Plant because the long, draping blooms look like pipe cleaners. It is also called Summer Poinsettia because of the deep red color. The Botanical name is Amaranthus caudatus and is best grown from seed when the soil is warm and all danger of frost is past. The seeds have been used as food for centuries in Mexico and the leaves are a substitute for spinach if you harvest when they are young and tender. Most people just grow Amaranthus for the unusual flowers. Enjoy and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
