Sounds like lack of pollination. Gardeners often add flowers like marigolds to their squash gardens to attract more bees to pollinate the blooms. You can also do this yourself with a tiny paint brush. Just stroke the pollen from one bloom and move it to another by touching the center of each flower as a bee would do.
