Marianne's Response

eileenjmm’s Question

I’ve had my houseplants outside all summer and I want to spray them before bringing them in. Problem is I have animals and birds, and don’t want to poison them. Also, I have aphids on my Purple Passions. I’ve been rinsing them off but they have come back.

Marianne's Response

Good for you - houseplants love to be outdoors in the summer but do bring in the bugs. Give each plant a bath using a mild dish washing soap such as Ivory soap and for the aphid outbreak use a insecticidal soap. These soaps are not toxic to your pets. Then check in a few weeks for more insects and wipe down the leaves of the plant with a damp cloth. I like to use a mulch of corks, marbles or pebbles on the houseplants to keep the potting soil from being exposed to fruit flies and other insects. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
