Marianne's Response
Ferns like cool, moist soil so the best time to transplant them is during the winter or early spring when they are dormant. If you must move a fern in the summer soak the soil the night before the transplant operation. Dig a circle around the roots so you can lift the entire rootball out of the ground and place it on a tarp or damp towel. Next wrap the roots to keep them moist while the fern is moved to the new location. Immediately replant at the same level it was growing before and keep the soil moist after the move. Do the dig and move on a cloudy day or during the cool of the evening hours. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
