Roses prefer full sun, or 7 to 8 hours a day, but will adapt to part sun of 4 to 5 hours a day with less blooms. There is a rose called Zephrine Doughlin that adapts to more shade and I grow, it as a climbing rose. It gets 3 to 4 hours of sun and still provides fragrant pink blooms. If you have a fairly shaded area I suggest you grow clematis or shade tolerant shrubs such as azaleas and rhododendrons rather than struggling to grow sun loving rose plants.
