Marianne's Response

Are Virginia Creeper berries poisonous?

I’ve read that the berries of the Virginia Creeper vine are poisonous. Some websites mention it and others do not. Just how poisonous are Virginia Creeper berries? Do you have to consume many for it to take effect?

Marianne's Response

Many plants are toxic and will cause an upset stomach, and some plants are poisonous and can cause death. But here's the thing—the amount of response may be different with each person. That is why poinsettias were once thought of as poisonous, as were tomatoes, because to people with allergies to these plants they can be deadly. But many people will have not adverse effects from poinsettias or tomatoes. Another example is the peanut. Edible to many but deadly to a few. Foxgloves in large amounts can be deadly, in small amounts can stop heart attacks (digitalis medication is made from foxgloves) and now we have people with wheat or gluten allergies, strawberry allergies, and so it goes. The general rule of green thumb is to consider all plants toxic and eat only what was planted as an edible. If you are worried after someone eats a plant call your local poison control. If you are worried about your pets, remember that what is toxic to some pets is not to others. If you are wondering if Virginia Creeper is worth planting or if it is too toxic, I would say plant it. This common creeping vine is not known to cause death, but if a child eats a few berries, illness (not death) would be the likely reaction. Supervise children in the garden and teach them not to eat anything they find without checking first. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
