My sympathies. Damp shade is a breeding ground for slugs and snails, and it will take a few years of concentrated baiting and trapping to get them under control. First, consider removing any breeding areas—tall grass, wet lumber, damp plastic pots or crevices. Limb up or take down trees to let in more sun to dry the area out. Use slug baits monthly, but especially during the months of April and August when they breed more often. Now set traps of damp newspaper crumbled in corners of the garden or lay clay flower pots on their sides in damp spots. Collect and smash the snails and slugs that are drawn to these places. Set out saucers of beer, go on night raids with a flash light and consider getting a duck to gobble down slugs. Stick with it and soon you will win this slimy battle. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
