Thinning turnip sprouts by hand
Hi Marianne,
I planted a row of turnip seed , and now there is some greenery coming up. What do turnip greens look like when they first start growing? The leaves coming up almost look like 4 leaf clover. It can’t be weeds because I use all new soil and fertilizer.

Eureka! Sounds like your seeds have sprouted and now you can thin out the seedlings so they have a few inches of room around each one. You can harden your heart and just pinch out the seedlings growing close together, leaving the strongest looking parsnips to grow to adult hood. I usually cover young seedlings with some bent chicken wire or a section of metal hardware cloth to protect the young plants from cats and wild life. Feel the soil every few days, if it is dry to the touch one inch below the surface you should carefully water the new plants. The appearance of the seedlings will change as they grow older.
Keep growing,
Marianne Binetti
