Marianne's Response

Could a harsh winter kill my mature fig trees?

I have two fig trees in my back yard, 5 and 3 years old. I don’t see any leaves so far this season. Is this normal because of the harsh weather we had? And if so, what do I need to do? I live in Montgomery County, MD.

Marianne's Response

I am not sure about how late spring arrives in your climate. In my zone 7, the figs are just starting to leaf out. I think you should wait until June and if you still see no signs of new growth - well, I offer my sympathies at the loss of your fig plants. If the hard winter has just delayed the bud breaking, then there is nothing you need to do. Let nature take her course. Sometimes Mother Nature surprises us in the most wonderful ways.
