Marianne's Response

What flowering plants can I grow in full sun in hanging baskets?

In the past I have used Ivy Geraniums in my hanging baskets. This year I am having trouble finding Ivy Geraniums. What would be good in hanging baskets in full sun? I am in Auburn, WA. Would sweet peas grow well in hanging baskets? How well does Preen work for preventing weeds?

It is a bit early to find ivy geraniums at local nurseries as they cannot handle any frost. Most nurseries sell them around Mother's Day. In full sun you can grow hanging petunias, bacopa, diascia, calibrochoa, and alyssum in hanging baskets as well as ivy geraniums. I do not recommend sweet peas in hanging baskets because they like to have cool roots. I have had good luck using Preen as a weed preventer in pathways and in a gravel driveway. They also make an organic Preen using corn meal that I use in the pathways of my vegetable garden. Now is the time of year to sprinkle Preen where you do not want weeds to grow. Remember you must remove the old weeds first and the Preen stops seeds from sprouting but does not kill weeds. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
