Marianne's Response

How can I use lime, Moss Out, and fertilizer to get rid of moss growing in my lawn?

Like most of us in this area, we have a moss problem. Have treated with Moss Out products in the past and want to add lime this year. I was wondering what order to apply the products if I were to start soon, and how long to wait in between the 3 (lime, moss out, and fertilizer)?

Moss like taxes will always be with us. Before you start spending time and money on removing the moss from your lawn remember that unless you change the conditions the moss will come back. Aerating your lawn will help it drain sooner and this should be your first step so that the lime and fertilizer can penetrate the mossy surface and get the soil. Use a core aerator to remove plugs of soil. Dolomite or Super Sweet lime can be applied any time of year but it works slowly to make the soil less acid. Moss loves acid soil. Wait a week before you fertilize or a few days if a heavy rain follows the application of lime. Moss also thrives in soil that is infertile so use a slow release lawn food on your turf in fall and early spring to get the grass to crowd out the moss. Limb up tree branches to allow more sunlight. Sometimes the most practical approach is to enjoy a moss lawn or replace your struggling grass with a Japanese style moss and fern garden. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
