Marianne's Response

jpayne’s Question

Am trying to reseed the lawn in bare spots etc. How long does it usually take seeds to germinate and how long should I wait before having my lawn mowed? Will the mower suck up the seeds?

Be patient - in the cool fall air it may take 6 to 8 weeks for a newly seeded area to fill in. You should not try to mow it with a power mower at first. use a push mower if you can or just let it get long all winter and mow in the spring. Sometimes if you seed in late fall it won't look great until the following March - yup, that was a mistake I made one year. Better to seed when the air and soil is still warm in early September or to wait until May or June if you want a fast germination rate. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
