Marianne's Response
alnsandy’s Question
We enjoy your weekly column in the TNT. I have everbearing raspberries and last year a gal in a local nursery advised me to cut all the canes back to the ground; which I did. BIG mistake; only getting one crop this year; producing right now. I wasn’t sure by your column if all the canes should be cut back on the everbearing variety or only the canes that produced this year? I would appreciate any advise you can give me. thanks

The general rule is to cut back the canes that are done bearing fruit when you see the leaves begin to yellow - so on everbearers this may mean waiting until late fall. Usually you will see new canes coming up that are green and these should be left alone as they will bear the early crop next spring. I know it is confusing to prune bramble fruits. Just look for the yellow leaves and remember that means it is done - so cut it out. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
