clundgren’s Question

Can I plant lettuce, onions, cucumbers and beans around the perimeter of a bed that has hostages in the middle?

Marianne's Response

Yes, you can mix vegetables with annual flowers and perennials like your hostas. (I don\'t think you meant to type hostages - but if you did, please release those people!) I use Osmocote Plus on both perennials and vegetables so you don\'t have to worry about using different plant foods on each. The hosta plants will not need as much fertilizer as the vegetables but keep in mind that lettuce can handle part sun but the other veggies you mentioned need full sun and warm soil to do well. You can put up tee pees of bamboo poles and grow your beans upright and even train the cucumbers to grow up a wire support to save room. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
