Low Growing Plants for Year Round Interest

We are new to the area and purchased a home that has a large front garden surrounded by a circular driveway. It is lovely…in summer. The few shrubs lose their leaves and the perennials die back to the ground in winter, leaving a less than inspiring view for a good part of the year. We would like to replace some of the extensive planting of day lilies with other plants of the same general height but which will give some autumn and winter interest to the garden, either with color or texture, and not be attractive to deer. The garden is rather large and gets sun all day — our only constraint is height such that our view is not eventually obscured, so do not want plants much taller than the day lilies. Expert suggestions welcome!

The attached photo is from several years ago before the area filled in.

Look for low growing plants with colorful foliage for year round interest in your landscape. Dwarf nandina, dwarf conifers such as golden yews, and the rainbow shades of heuchera will all be good for winter interest. Don't forget you can add winter blooming bulbs such as snowdrop and crocus and blooming groundcovers such as ajuga black scallop for more low growing color.
