You still have time to prune your roses this spring. Cutting back the tallest canes or stalks by one half or more now will delay the onset of flowering but give you more compact rose plants. If you prefer very tall rose plants you can skip the shortening of the long canes and just snip out any branch that is dead, diseased or damaged. I also like to remove any rose branches that are crossing or rubbing with another cane and any real skinny sprouts that are thinner than a pencil. My hope for you is that no deer live nearby.
