Your red calla lily (Zantedeschia) is a special species that should be grown differently than the common calla lily. It prefers full sun (part shade in hot climates) in soil that is rich in organic matter but  that has good drainage. Once your gift plant is done blooming transplant it into the ground outdoors. If you live in a cold winter area with freezing soil each winter you should enjoy this rather tender bulb in a container so you can bring it indoors in the fall to protect the dormant tuber. During growth your calla needs regular water but when the foliage fades and the tuber or bulb goes dormant you should cut back on watering so as to not rot the bulb. For this reason if you decide to store you bulb over winter pick a cool, dark but not too damp space - perhaps in unheated garage or shed. If all this sound like too much work you can just enjoy your gift, move it into the ground this spring and let nature decide if it should rebloom or survive the winter. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
