The brown spots on your tomato plant could be bacterial spot disease. Remove the infected leaves immediately to keep the bacteria from spreading. Hot sun and good air circulation will help to control the infection but if it returns you could try a copper fungicide applied every 7 to 10 days for 3 weeks. Good fall cleanup is essential for making sure this disease does not return each year so do not reuse potting soil and scrub and pots and tools with a bleach solution  to stope the spread of the spores.  Some tomatoes are more disease resistant than others so perhaps the novelty varieties are more prone to this infection.
