The tree should have been planted deeper but it will adapt and do well especially if you take the time to add more mulch on top of the roots. You can use more of the smooth stones for a mulch but the plant would prefer a cooler organic mulch of wood chips or bark chips. Do not pile mulch up around the trunk like a turtleneck.
