Jade plant problems

Dear Marianne
I have this jade plant that is growing by leaps & bounds. However, I noticed several little white fuzzy cocoon looking things on it. Also, accompanying those are black & white dots on the top & bottoms of the leaves. Can you help a girl/novice out? I tried to take pictures to show you, I don’t know if they’re good enough to help you. Thanks as always. I took several pictures,
I could only upload 1 of them.

I can help your jade as it looks like a classic case of mealy bug, a common infestation of jade plants. This is an insect that covers itself with cottony scale to protect it as it feeds on the inner juice of your jade. To control mealy bug and scale dip a cotton swab into rubbing alcohol and touch the back of each cottony deposit to dry up the insects. If the problem is really severe you may need to use an insecticidal soap on your plant to kill the bugs. Either way you will need to repeat the cure after a few weeks as eggs hatch that were left behind by the insects. Keep your jade healthy by not overwatering and use a slow release plant food like Osmocote every six months or so. Healthy plants will out grow an infestation of mealy bugs. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
