Marianne's Response

Lime or no lime?

Hi, Marianne
I’ve been told that tomatoes do better with lime and I’ve been told they need acidic soil. Which should I believe?

I would not add lime to my soil without a soil test. Tomatoes do fine with soil on the acid side as the preferred pH is 6.5 to 7 with 7 being neutral. So tomatoes thrive in acid soil but do not need acid soil. Enrich your soil with compost so that it is light and drains well and fertilize with an all purpose plant food such as Osmocote in the spring and your tomatoes should be fine.
