Root Hormones

Hi Marianne,
I am transplanting evergreen tree saplings from small containers to larger ones. The fellow at the nursery where I purchased said I should be using root hormone powder when first planting. He gave a small (tablespoon) of powder he called Rootone and that I could get it online. I could not find any, but did see a lot of options.
Do you have any suggestions regarding this ? I have never heard of root hormones.
Thank you for your time.
Stan

I am familiar with Rootone and other plant hormones used to take cuttings and grow roots but have not seen any studies or suggestions that this rooting hormone should be used when transplanting trees and shrubs. Gardening is an adventure however and so why not give it a try as you were given the rooting powder for free. It is rather expensive to buy. The most important factor in a successful transplant is not to let the roots dry out. Fall is a good time to transplant most trees and shrubs.  Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
