Potato Questions

Hello Ms. Binetti,
I hope this finds you well and please forgive me the number of questions.

If I buy organic potatoes from the store this spring can they be planted directly in the soil or do they have to go through a cold storage?

When growing in bags with side access should I succession plant for multiple harvests or harvest through the side panel?

Would storing fall harvest potatoes in a bucket of sand outside under a tarp in zone 7a work for making my own seed potatos?

Lastly, do all these answers apply to sweet potatoes as well?

Thank you in advance,
Harold

Marianne's Response

Hi Harold and I think you have a great potato harvest in your future. Yes, you can plant organic potatoes from the store if they were not treated with a preservative. No, you do not need to do successive plantings for a continual harvest of potatoes unless you want a constant supply of new or young potatoes. Just harvest early, mid and late season. Yes, you can store potatoes outdoors in sand. No, Sweet potatoes are a more tender tropical plant so none of these answers apply to sweet potatoes. Keep growing and enjoy your spuds! Marianne Binetti
