Marianne's Response

What is this

I have this invasive small tree type plant, and I would like to know what it is. My arborist and landscaper haven’t any idea. It doesn’t leaf out until mid June here in the mountains of N.C., and in August has very fragrant flowers, then neon dark blue berries in the fall.

Marianne's Response

Well it looks like a fancy hydrangea with the fragrance of a daphne so I am going to guess it is a native in your area as you said it was an invasive - so if you did not plant it we can assume it is a wildling. I am not familiar with the native plants of your area but a local native plant society would be sure to know the name of such an interesting plant. Looks like a keeper to me.
