Marianne's Response
Vinca Minor, Periwinkle is on Wa noxious plant list
Hi,
In The Tribune Sunday Paper, you stated Vinca Minor, or periwinkle, as a native and good for shade.
THIS PLANT is on the NOXIOUS weed list for WASHINGTON. It is native to Eurasia.
I complain because I have 7 acres of 2nd growth forest, with several trees over 200 yrs old, and I am fighting this noxious weed in my marshy area.
PLEASE retract, correct, and fix your statement. AND maybe you should do some research, as you must have forgotten what you learned in college.

I respectfully suggest you check the current Washington State Noxious weed website. Vinca minor is not listed as a noxious weed. It is listed as pending which means it needs to be watched and evaluated. It is still sold in nurseries. I do agree that in the right conditions such as moist soil it can be very ambitious and take over and I would recommend it for dry shade only. I do have it in my own garden and it is well behaved but I do realize in your situation it can be very invasive. I do thank you for your concern and will in the future remind readers that some weeds are not listed as noxious but are instead to be watched as they can be invasive. The Washington State Noxious Weed Board tries hard to give weeds ranking depending on how destructive it can be. It is so important that we all grow the right plant in the right place. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
