How to care for a Lapins cherry tree

Purchased & planted Cherry tree in early July in Columbia, NC. Bought at Home Depot (a bare-root,3ft tall, 2yrs old, it was just a stick). Since having this cherry tree stick, it has only grown a couple leaves and now appears to be dying. Was this poor little guy already dying to begin with? Is there anything we can do to make it thrive?

If the stick you planted sprouted a few leaves, than I am going to say it was a healthy bare root tree. The problem may be that once it started to grow the soil dried out or the weather became too hot and the roots stopped supplying water to the expanding leaves. Don't give up just yet. Keep the soil moist and add a mulch to keep the soil cool. Sometimes a young tree will drop all leaves and look dead only to revive the following spring with lots of new growth.
