Marianne's Response
How to get rid of voles?

We have tried everything, but we CANNOT get rid of these voles. They are literally eating us out of house and home. So I will no longer grow dahlias or Lillies because of the voles, but now they are eating the roots of our grass and leaving big holes in our yard. We have tried mouse traps, Volex in their holes, an outside cat, who occasionally gets a vole, but they I am sure are multiplying faster than we can beat them. We are thinking M80s in their holes. Seriously, we are in Olympia, Washington. Can you help with new suggestions.

So sorry! We also have voles or field mice but are able to control but not eliminate them by keeping long grass cut and using the vole snap trap (Amazon has several types) around their entry holes along with red pepper spray on plants like young trees where they will strip the bark. There are plants they do not like such as hellebores, daffodils, salvias and Jack in the pulpit but for precious plants it may be most practical to make a cage out of wire mesh to enclose the roots when you plant. When it comes to tulips and other plants they love I just plant in containers so that neither the moles or voles can get to the bulbs. Some people report great success setting up several mouse traps outside each entry hole. Voles do take over mole runways so if you kill a mole make sure you bury him in the runway to keep the voles from taking over. I would also not give up on the Voleex at it takes time to bring down a huge population of voles. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
