Marianne's Response
Why does half of my Rose of Sharon look dead?

My Rose of Sharon has been very healthy until this spring.
Half of it is all green with plenty of buds.
The other has absolutely no growth at all. Looks completely dead, however when I scratch below the bark it is green.
This year it was about three weeks late in blooming.
Help!
It has been one of my favorites.
Ideas please?
Thank you,
Brenda

Marianne's Response
The Rose of Sharon is so sensitive to cold nights that it could have delayed bloom if a cold wind has hit one side of the shrub, but most likely you have underground root damage from vole or mole. Wait a few weeks then if no leaves appear I suggest you cut out the dead wood and let the healthy half take over. Many shrubs were late in waking up from winter dormancy this year with the cold spring weather. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
