Marianne's Response

value of plants

Hi Marianne – I’ve just had a number of my treasured plants damaged, how do I put a value on them? I’m looking to show my HOA just how much damage was done on my property and asking for reimbursement. To me these plants are priceless, to non gardeners they just don’t understand.

First I am so sorry for your loss. I do understand how much value plants can bring to a life, not just a piece of property. I suggest you list each damaged plant and take this list to a nursery or look online at the price to replace each plant. If you lost a mature tree or shrub, just double the price of what it would cost to buy a smaller version of the plant. This will give you a monetary value to present but it will not cover the emotional loss. Perhaps if the case go to trial an experienced lawyer would know how to factor that into your loss. As for the damaged plants, sometimes cutting off broken branches and other damage means the plant can start fresh and may not be a total loss. Best of luck as you rebuild and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
