Skip or Cherry Laurel Winter Burn

Hello! I just planted these laurels last Spring ( 2022)
This winter burn happened in the past Montreal or so .. I had been out town for the last two weeks. I have 12 of these.
I have no idea how to approach this .. Only to say I am quite concerned. Do you think they will survive? Thank you so much for your help . I am so happy I found this wonderful site. I am relatively new to gardening.
Warmest regards,
Karen Meyers

Marianne's Response
Hi Karen and welcome to gardening! The photo helps out a lot but my answer is still - I don't know for sure. In most cases I would say the roots most likely survived so just cut back the plants in mid spring and new growth will appear. However in your case these were not established plants so they may indeed be dead. The only way to tell is to wait. By June if you see no new growth from the base of the shrubs then out they go. A hardier shrub may be the answer in your area. Conifers such as cedar and fir are more cold tolerant than evergreens with broad leaves like laurels. We all learn from our gardening mishaps so don't be discouraged and Keep Growing, Marianne Binetti
