Marianne's Response

Blackspot on my roses.

I have blackspot on my roses. I have removed the infected leaves and put them in the trash. How do I proceed to get 1 -rid of the blackspot and 2-protect my roses from it?

If you are going to recommend using/spraying them with a fungicide, please recomend a specific one.

Should I use fungicide to water the roses?

How should I clean the garden tools that I use on my roses with blackspot?

I read somehwere on this website that a rosserian should be consulted. Can you recommend rosaerians to me?

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Marianne's Response

First, know that black spot is unlikely to kill your rose plants.  It is a fungal infection and can be controlled by plucking off the infected leaves (good job! you already did this) and then keeping the rose plants healthy by regular feeding and watering. Try not to get the foliage wet when you water and give roses lots of room for good air circulation. Another tip is to add a fresh mulch under the plants to seal in any disease spores that fell to the ground when you were removing the leaves. No special treatment needed to clean your tools. If you do all this, you won't' need to spray a fungicide. To talk to a Rosarian about how best to grow roses in your area I suggest you contact a local nursery or the Rose Society in your state. Nurseries often host rose shows and you can see rose varieties in bloom and meet local rose experts. I see a rosy future for you. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
