Sedum Morganianum
Sedum Morganianum is also known as Burro’s Tail and is easily identified by its long, heavily leaved stems that can grow up to 3 to 4 feet. The leaves of the tail are light green and feature a waxy covering. The plant produces small, star-shaped flowers that are shaded light red or pink. A dwarf version of the plant (Sedum burrito) is available with leaved stems that are only 1.5 feet long. Burro’s tail enjoys bright light and ideally receives at least 4 hours daily. The plant thrives in hardiness zones 9 to 11.
Mammillaria Crinita
Mammillaria Crinita is also known as Pincushion Cactus for its small, dark green, rounded projections (i.e., tubercles) that are in the pattern of the Fibonacci sequence. The plant typically grows up to 3 inches vertically in a squat, cylindrical formation. Light pink or light yellow flowers protrude above the tubercles when in bloom. The plant enjoys bright sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 9b to 11b.
Kalanchoe Tomentosa
Kalanchoe Tomentosa is also known as Panda Plant and is identified by its fuzzy, rounded leaves and tubular flowers protruding from the top. The plant commonly grows 1 to 2 feet high when grown indoors and several feet when grown outdoors. The plant enjoys direct sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 9b to 11.
Euphorbia Milii
Euphorbia Milii is also known as Crown of Thorns because of the thorns (up to 1 inch long) that extend from its wooden stem (up to 3 feet high). Green leaves grow randomly on the stems and the plant blooms flowers in different shades of pink and in rare occasions white. The Crown of Thorns desires bright light and grows well in sunny windows facing the south or west. The plant thrives in hardiness zones 9B to 11.
Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera plants are commonly under 1 foot but come in multiple varieties that vary drastically in height (7 inches to 6 feet high). The plant has thick, long green leaves that jut out from the plant’s small stem. The edges of the leaves are ribbed with teeth and occasionally bloom yellow, orange, or red flowers. The plant enjoys indirect sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 8 to 10.
Crassula Ovata
Crassula Ovata is also known as Jade Plant and is identified by its thick, round leaves (1 to 2 inches) ranging in color from pale grey to dark green. They make great house plants because they start small and grow very slowly but can reach up to 4 feet high many years later. The plant blooms small, star-shaped flowers in shades of purple and pink. Jade plants enjoy bright light and thrive in hardiness zones 10 to 11.
Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana
Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana is also known as Flaming Katy for its brightly colored flowers in shades of pink and yellow. The multi-branched plant grows vertically (6 to 18 inches high) with large, thick, green leaves. The Flaming Katy desires indirect sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 1 to 11.
Haworthia Fasciata
Haworthia Fasciata is also known as Zebra Plant for its repeating horizontal, white stripes along the outside of the plant’s thick, green leaves. The leaves are clustered together (5 to 8 inches tall) and produce white flowers when in bloom. The plant enjoys bright, but not direct sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 10a to 10b.
Sedum Spurium
Sedum Spurium is also known as Two-Row Stonecrop for its knack of growing in two rows along the stem. Its popularity as a groundcover plant stems from its moderate growth rate and ability for each plant to cover area up to 2 feet wide while only 3 to 6 inches vertically. The thick, round leaves are green during the spring and summer and slowly turn darker shades of red in the autumn and winter. The plant enjoys direct sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 3 to 9.
Sansevieria Trifasciata
Sansevieria Trifasciata is also known as Snake Plant because of its long, wavy, spear-like leaves. The plant’s white and green or yellow and green leaves are stiff and grow vertically up to 2 feet in height. The plant enjoys direct sunlight and thrives in hardiness zones 9 to 11. However, the plant can tolerate low levels of light and is one of the best succulents for rooms with low sunlight.
