Hostas are favorites of slugs and snails but also deer, rabbit and woodchucks. Are the plants eaten to the ground or just foliage full of holes? Slugs leave slime and holes in leave, deer and rabbits devour to the ground or eat entire leaves. Try red pepper sprinkled on the foliage for a deer repellent this year. Another idea is to place damp sand around the plants so you can find the footprints of whatever creature is causing the problem. Mesh wire covers may also work for spring protection.
