Some adaptable shrubs that can take sun or shade are the Rainbow Bush or Leucothe with evergreen leaves spotted pink, cream and gold, the always tidy Japanese Holly with deep green evergreen foliage, the graceful and narrow growing Nandina or Heavenly Bamboo or some of the more compact hydrangeas like 'Endless Summer' that flower on new and old wood - so you can prune them to keep them more compact.
