Marianne's Response

Agapantha

My agapantha flowered for a couple of years beautifully. Last year no blooms. I unpotted split them up into 2 pots…left them out until it was too cold. They are cellar dwellers for the winter, usually go dormant…but this year green sprouts are coming up like crazy…way too early to even think about going outside for summer camp. What is going on???? Help me….I think the blue bloom is one of the prettiest ever.

Good news for you. Your agapanthus is just so happy that you took the time to divide them up that they are ready to grow. You can slow them down by keeping them in a colder but not freezing location with no or low light. An unheated garage or shed could work. Then transplant outdoors when frost danger has passed and they should do great this summer. Don't' fret if the new foliage turns yellow as it adjusts to the outdoors or if you get few blooms the first summer.  It may take an extra season for the plants to settle in but I see big blue blooms in your future. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
