Amarylis

Can an Amarylis be planted out doors after frost has ended? What location is best? North, South, East, or West?

Marianne's Response

Amaryllis are tropical plants and cannot handle cold weather but if you live in a warm climate they may be able to survive outdoors. The bulb will go dormant after it blooms so it needs dry soil then can resprout for another life cycle. Some gardeners have luck letting the green leaves die back naturally after the bulb blooms indoors and letting the bulb rest in a dark closet for a few months. Then you can bring the bulb back into a sunny room with a south or west facing window and see if you can get it to sprout again. Fertilize once you see new leaves sprout. Forcing bulbs to bloom indoors is a fun challenge for flower lovers during the winter months so just grow for it. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
