Roses with almost no foliage fight fungus

Thank you Marianne for answering my Rose question regarding black spot problem. My roses are planted in containers and hardly have any leave on them now. What can I do to my roses for them to sprout more leaves and get them to bush out again. On some of my roses bushes the leaves are always turning yellow and by the time I pull all of those off, I’m left with barely any leave at all.

Sounds like your roses are not happy either because they dried out in the pots or were given too much water and if the pots do not drain well this could cause root rot. Do not give up as roses can sprout back to life even after losing all their leaves. I would fertilize immediately with a slow release plant food like Osmocote following the dosage on the package. Than to increase drainage raise the containers from the ground just a bit by slipping plastic bottle caps or even bricks under the corners of the containers. This bit of air space allows the water to drain more freely from the bottom of the pots. Do not let the soil dry out or keep the soil too wet. When a rose is stressed it is most susceptible to disease. If the new growth turns yellow with black spots you will also want to spray the roses with a fungicide made for black spot such as Funginex, again following the instructions on the label. Good luck and hopefully a change in the weather (less rain) will help your roses to outgrow this fungus among us. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
