Marianne's Response
Another Barefoot root strawberry
I just received some barefoot strawberries in the mail and they are a bit moldy. Will they be ok or should they be trashed? Also, how should I prepare my existing straberry plants for winter? I’ve heard many opinions.
Thanks,
Harold

I recommend you go ahead and rinse, then plant those bareroot strawberry plants now. The mold most likely will disappear over the winter. You can snip off any brown or dead leaves and even shorten up the long roots by an inch or two. As for winter prep for strawberries there is no need to do anything if you live in a zone without really cold, deep freezing winters. If you do live up North where the soil can freeze down to a depth of 12 inches, then cover the strawberry bed with straw or some other mulch for protection. The local gardeners, Master Gardeners and nursery owners in your area will be the best at recommending what to mulch strawberries with in your climate zone. Enjoy looking forward to strawberry shortcake. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
