Marianne's Response
Another, safer herbicide? Weed killer? Please rethink!
Hi Marianne, I was not happy to see this paragraph in your column on Sunday in The Olympian newspaper: “Spraying with an herbicide such as RoundUp (tradename Glysophate) works in some situations, especially in early summer when the weed is actively growing. Resorting to herbicides may be the practical remedy if an invasion is smothering other vegetation needed by local birds and wildlife.”
There is a lot of *controversy* around RoundUp, and many believe it not only kills weeds but causes cancer in humans.
While that issue percolates and runs through the courts, can you share with your readers *alternatives* to RoundUp that will kill weeds? This is REALLY IMPORTANT!
Local birds and wildlife ALSO pick up RoundUp if and when they do reach the vegetation that grows up beyond the weeds. Why would we want to possibly poison birds and animals much less ourselves with this chemical? Or introduce it into the food cycle for the wildlife in our yards?
Thank you for the generally fine information and coverage! Appreciate your attention to find effective alternatives to Glyphosate and its brand name product!
Best, Michele
