ant problem in flower garden

I have a rock garden with perennial flowers. This year the catmint is dying. In the process of planting a replacement, I noticed a lot of ants and there was a hole under the plant that had been there. Is this caused by ants? How do I get rid of them without harming the plants?

Ants can indeed build underground cities that can disturb roots. One tip for ant control is to pour boiling hot water from a tea kettle down into the hole. There are also ant pesticides that the ants will take down deep into the colony. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
