Baby Tears Plant

Please help me with my indoor plant, Baby Tears. I am great with indoor plants, but this one keeps losing leaves. I took it to the patio and softly brushed off the dead leaves last week. It looks so bad. Should I use some food, more or less? I’m a faithly weekly waterer, maybe too much for this one, so I cut back. Yikes HELP!

Thank you for the photo. It looks like you may have either poor drainage so that the roots are rotting by standing in water or not enough water as this is one plant that must have constantly moist soil. I am going to guess that watering once a week is not enough if the plant has filled the pot with roots. I suggest you cut back all the overhanging brown branches and then ease the plant out of the pot. If the roots are mushy and wet, poor drainage from standing water is to blame. If the roots are dry and brown then give the plant a larger pot with a potting soil high in water holding organic matter. This plant would love some peat moss in the new potting soil. Cutting the plant back is going to stimulate new growth and once you improve the drainage or give it more water you should see improvement. This plant loves to grow under growing benches in a greenhouse. This is because it thrives on high humidity and the daily watering plus good drainage found under slatted growing tables. It does not need full sun or a lot of fertilizer. Wait until you see new growth then keep waiting until early summer to fertilize.  Then give your baby tears plant  just 1/4 teaspoon of Osmocote slow release plant food. That is all it will need for a year. Now write back and let us know if the roots were too wet or too dry. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
