Marianne's Response
Baking soda to kill weeds?
We are moving pile of wood chips, in grown with morning glory roots to large space between trees. Ground is cleaned out, covered in layer of wet newspaper. Can I use baking soda to prevent new morning glories from getting a start in the new area? It seems like it should work, thank you.

I am pretty sure baking soda would not prevent morning glory as this is a very stubborn weed. Covering the area with a layer of wet newspaper is a better option and healthier for the soil as baking soda would change the pH and upset the balance of little soil critters. Keep cutting any morning glory that pops up and keep covering with newspaper. All plants need sunlight and blocking the light will prevent them from spreading. My sympathies - morning glory is a nightmare weed but stay with it and you will succeed in controlling this invader. Keep growing, (but not morning glory) Marianne Binetti
