Pruning Baptisia

Can Baptisia be pruned in the spring to prevent it from becoming tall and leggy and needing a stake?

Yes, the Baptisia or False Indigo plant has a deep tap root that makes it one tough plant. It does need full sun or it will reach for more sunlight and grow leggy. You can trim it by half once the new growth is two feet tall. There is also a white form of Baptisia that is more compact at only 3 feet tall instead of the tall, blue spires or Baptisia Australia that you grow and that can reach a height of 6 feet. This is one of the few perennials that does need dividing to keep it healthy. It will just slowly spread into a larger clump over the years. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
