Best Varieties of Agapanthus for the PNW

Marianne, is there any kind of hardy Agapanthus that will grow and return in the Pacific Northwest? If there is, what is the best time to plant it? Thank you for your time!

Marianne's Response

There is an agapanthus called Hardy Blue Nile that can survive winters in zone 7 which is most of Western Washington and Oregon but only if the bulbs have perfect drainage such as in a raised bed or containers and then cover with fern fronds or move pots under eaves of house to keep out rain over the winter. Another hard variety is called hardy Charlotte Agapanthus. The best time to plant the bulbs would be in the spring or in summer if you find these varieties already in bloom at the nursery. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
