Okay to feed birds in cold weather?

I don’t put out birdseed, having noticed rodents on the ground beneath the bird feeders. However, I do suspend suet after night temperatures drop into the 30s. Some seeds fall from the suet to the ground, but apparently not enough to feed rodents. Am I deluding myself?

Marianne's Response

I think you are doing the right thing—thank you for being so considerate. In my column next week, I will report that the Audubon Society says feeding wild birds during times of extreme famine (such as frozen temps) is okay. Plus I like to think that the rats are hibernating, but I am probably fooling myself. Thanks for reading the column. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
