Marianne's Response

Can I plant vegetables where a blacktop used to be?

Eighteen years ago I allowed an area in my yard to be black topped so that a basketball hoop could be installed. Ten years ago I dug the black top up and disposed of some. The area was then covered with soil and compost and I have planted flowers. I now want to plant vegetables but am concerned about the oil product associated with the tar. Would it be safe to now plant vegetables?

Marianne's Response

Yes, your soil has been sitting for a decade with plants and microbes in the soil cleaning up any bits of tar so you are good to go. Happy planting, Marianne Binetti
