Tomato plants turning brown at 1/2 inch above the roots. What can be done? Thank you!

Marianne's Response

So sorry - sounds like you have stem rot caused by a soil fungus and there is not much you can do once the plants turn brown. Cool, damp weather and poor air circulation encourage this fungus among us. Adding sand or perlite to the soil will help with drainage as will growing your plants in raised beds. Do not put tomatoes or other heat loving plants out too early. Cold soil holds too much moisture. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
