Black Spot on Roses
Hello Marianne,
Can you please tell me the best way to keep black spot off my rose bushes? I live in town in Enumclaw.
Thank you!

The best way to control black spot is to pull off the lowest leaves as soon as they begin to turn yellow or show any signs of the black spots. Then put a fresh mulch on top of the soil to seal in any disease spores that may have fallen to the ground. Grow roses in full sun with plenty of air circulation and do not get foliage wet if you need to water. Be sure to grow disease resistant roses such as Flower Carpet, Rosa rugosa, Knock Out Roses and most of the David Austin roses. Pink roses with no fragrance are the most disease resistant and red roses seem to suffer from black spot the most often. If your rose plant insists on looking ugly with this fungal disease you can spray with a fungicide but you are allowed to dig it up and get rid of it. Plants are not your children, and you can replace them with something better behaved. Hope less rain ahead helps your rose overcome the black spot infection. Keep growing, Marianne Binetti
